The SURVIVOR sweater supports Runway for Recovery a breast cancer organization founded by Olivia Achtmeyer Boger. Learn more about Olivia's story here.
Runway for Recovery is a breast cancer non-profit that honors and supports families affected by breast cancer and dedicates resources to support children who have lost caregivers to the disease. Runway fosters a sense of community within the families, children, and survivors that they work with to inspire joy in the midst of a seemingly hopeless time.
The Survivor sweater is modeled by the amazing survivor Dorothy Burnham.
In May of 2018, while nursing her infant with her two-year-old playing with toy trucks at her feet, Dorothy noticed a lumpy area in her left breast. It would turn out to breast cancer: "The last thing I did before heading to chemo was nurse Luke one final time. I felt a sense of loss over that, over missing Luke’s babyhood, and over missing out on having another child. Those were the hallmark aspects of having cancer for me.”
Dorothy lives in Newburyport, and she is the most kick ass woman in town: kind, empathetic, and not one to seek attention. She is determined to help kids who have lost moms to breast cancer and to "model" for young women to be self-advocates and push for more testing if you feel something is off.
Dorothy wants women to know that there are “physical changes and an emotional burden” that come with breast cancer and while you don't return to your former self, you grow into a person who understands the preciousness of life. She has just finished treatment at MGH and we are so grateful to her for modeling the SURVIVOR sweater.
